A large evergreen native tree, from the Aquilaria Species, 20 to 40 meters in height, 1.5-2.5 meters in girth, moderately straight with an often fluted stem.
The leaves are 5-9cm long, thinly coriaceous, oblong-lanceolate and the flowers are white, green, or dirty yellow.
This tree is mostly found in various Southeast Asian forests like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Laos, Brunei, Burma, Vietnam and Cambodia.
The scent is obtained from the dark aromatic resin after the tree had been infected with a fungal infection which results in a very dense, dark, resin embedded heartwood.
The scent is reminiscent of vetiver and sandalwood and is extremely long-lasting.
It is said that the infected tree must be at least around 50 years old to produce the resin.
Thus the longer the process takes place the more expensive and highly valuable the resin is.
Therefore it is valued worldwide in many cultures for its distinctive fragrance which is mainly used for incense and perfumes.
